Here are some suggestions for making each performance special. These should be considered REQUIREMENTS for paid performances as the residents should be made aware that all of us are going the extra mile to make this event special.
PREPARE IN ADVANCE
1. Have a tuned piano positioned in such a way as to let the performer face the audience. All obstructions should be removed from the top and seating should be staged in such a way as to maximize participation by the residents. The closer the better!
2. Post flyers to let residents know that this is a Special Event and that the facility is spending money and effort to provide quality entertainment - not just another volunteer from a local school or church. Promotional material is available upon request.
3. Make sound system preparations. Communication with the performer is key to this. Some performers will bring sound when needed. I have a small cordless system for a room of about 40 residents.
INTRODUCE THE PERFORMER
Be prepared to introduce the performer in an appropriate manner. You should know something about the bio and give a little background info.
During the Performance
1. Thank you - but I don't need help in entertaining. Please don't sent in a singer or some other performer to help me out. I have a show planned.
2. Encourage residents to participate by offering requests and applauding at appropriate times/
3. Keep distractions to a minimum
4. Stay for the performance
AFTER THE PERFORMANCE
1. Be available to critique the performance and to arrange future bookings
2. Have a check ready. Most professionals prefer a company check to cash and since this is my business, I like to keep a paper trail.
